 Series of articles to highlight problems, barriers, what works, what does not work and the role of technology in patient education.

​Identify issues and barriers


  • ​What issues exist within the healthcare arena that impede patient education?
  • What barriers to effective patient education do nurses identify in clinical areas ?
  • What can we do to improve patient education within the academic setting?

Create standards 



​Using feedback from clinical nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, health care consumers and academia, standards will be set for the health care industry and academia to promote and deliver effective, patient centered education to everyone.

Implement and assess



​Rigorous research and feedback will be used prior to introducing the patient education standards. Feedback and evidence based practice will guide revisions. 

Making changes to patient education to improve safety 


We want to promote safety for all health care consumers. 
Patient centered education is promoted with an emphasis on medication administration best practices, acute and chronic disease management and health promotion.

     Purpose of our task force:
​
1. Purpose is to identify barriers and provide solutions pertaining to quality patient education in the health care and educational setting.
2. Create standards of best practice, using the QSEN competencies in the health care and educational setting that will engage patients and families in their health care, promote and provide quality patient education and safe practices in the healthcare, educational, home and community setting.
​ 3. Provide on-going assessment and evaluation related to the standards of best practice for patient education in the healthcare, educational, home and community setting.
